Remembering Stories

We are shaped in countless ways by the people, places, cultures, stories, and experiences that came before us.

Sometimes those connections are easy to recognize: a family recipe, a photograph, a holiday tradition, a song, a familiar saying, a story we’ve heard a hundred times. Others show up more quietly—in our values, gestures, interests, ways of caring for people, or ideas about how life should be lived.

Remembering these stories can connect us with people we love, help us understand something about ourselves and each other, or simply bring a moment of comfort, recognition, or belonging.

Ancestral Echoes is a two-hour experiential workshop devoted to those connections. Through yoga and somatic practices, meditation, storytelling, reflection, and creative exploration, we’ll notice some of the many influences that have shaped us, honor what feels meaningful, and consider what we want to continue, reinterpret, or add to the story ourselves.

How The Night Unfolds

An Evening of Memory, Connection & Yoga

There are so many ways the past remains present.

A recipe made without looking at the instructions. A song you know because someone played it when you were young. A phrase that sounds exactly like your mother. A photograph that brings an entire place back to life. A tradition you’ve kept, changed, or made completely your own.

Ancestral Echoes is an evening for spending time with these connections—and discovering a few you may not have noticed before.

Bring an object that holds a story and join us for two hours of meditation, gentle movement, yoga philosophy, music, reflection, storytelling, and creative practice.

We’ll begin with an ancestral meditation, allowing memory and imagination to wander toward the people, places, stories, and experiences that came before us.

We’ll explore the many ways we already remember—from photographs, food, music, language, and traditions to gestures, values, ways of caring, and stories passed from one person to another.

Along the way, we’ll draw from yoga philosophy and the Eight Limbs of Yoga, including svādhyāya, as a way of becoming curious about the impressions that have helped shape who we are.

Through movement, breath, reflection, readings, and creative practices, you’ll create an Ancestral Map of the connections, strengths, questions, and influences that feel meaningful to you.

We’ll play with oracle cards, words, images, music, and story, noticing what sparks a memory, an association, a question, or an unexpected connection.

And before the evening ends, you’ll create a simple ancestral practice of your own—perhaps a ritual, mantra, meditation, remembrance, movement, creative practice, recipe, song, or something entirely personal to you.

We’ll close with rest, meditation, and a few quiet moments to honor what came before—and notice what you want to continue.

What Guides Ancestral Echoes

Ancestral Echoes draws from several ideas in yoga philosophy that we’ll encounter during our evening together. If you’re curious, these articles offer a little background before we meet:

Saṃskāras: The Impressions That Influence How We Experience the World
How experiences leave impressions that can continue to influence us.

The Eight Limbs of Yoga: More Than a Physical Practice
Yoga as a way of life—with practices and principles that extend far beyond what happens on a yoga mat.

The Koshas: A Different Way of Understanding Yourself
A yogic perspective on the different dimensions of our experience, including body, breath and energy, mind, wisdom, and something deeper.

Optional reading—we’ll explore what we need together during the workshop.

Reimagine

As the evening begins to wind down, return to something that has stayed with you.

A strength. A tradition. A feeling. A story. A trait.

What ancestral echo has a place in the present?

It might become a small ritual, a movement or breath practice, a mantra, meditation, creative expression, act of remembrance, or a fresh take on an old tradition.

Take what has stirred something in you and give it new life in a way that reflects who you are and what you want to bring into the world.

What Inspired Ancestral Echoes

Ancestral Echoes was inspired in part by my training in Yoga Therapy for Ancestral & Collective Trauma at YogaX at Stanford Psychiatry, where our teacher guided us through practices for acknowledging ancestral pain while also connecting with strength, gratitude, and what those who came before us made possible.

In my own practice, photographs, handwritten recipes, music, and meditation brought back vivid memories of my family—their humor, kindness, quirks, strength, and wonderfully distinctive laughs. I began noticing some of those same qualities living in me.

Ancestral Echoes grew from that experience and the possibility of discovering what remains alive in each of us.
