Mind-body practices with Sarah Atkinson
Discover what helps your nervous system feel safe, settled, and supported.
An Individual Sensory Lab Session is a personalized exploration of the sensory experiences that influence how you feel, rest, focus, and reconnect with yourself. Together, we’ll gently explore evidence-informed mind-body practices to discover what best supports your nervous system.
Rather than following a single modality or protocol, each session is guided by curiosity, choice, and your own experience.
Includes Your Personalized Sensory Profile
Leave with a customized guide highlighting the sensory experiences, practices, and environments that appeared most supportive during your session, along with ideas for continuing your exploration at home.

Every Individual Sensory Lab Session is personalized, but here’s what you can generally expect:

2. We’ll explore together.
Using evidence-informed mind-body practices, we’ll gently explore a variety of sensory experiences based on your interests and comfort level. This may include:
3. We’ll notice what works for you.
There is no right or wrong experience. Together, we’ll notice what feels supportive, what doesn’t, and what you discover along the way.
4. You’ll receive Your Sensory Profile.
You’ll leave with a personalized guide highlighting the practices, sensory experiences, and supportive strategies that seemed to resonate most during your session, along with ideas for continuing your exploration at home.
Sessions are designed to support relaxation and well-being and are not a substitute for medical or mental health care.
There isn’t one practice that works for everyone.
Some people settle with quiet. Others with sound.
Some feel grounded through movement. Others through stillness.
Some find comfort in gentle pressure, warmth, nature, or rhythm.
An Individual Sensory Lab Session takes the guesswork out of self-care by helping you discover what genuinely supports your nervous system. Instead of following someone else’s formula, you’ll leave with greater confidence in your own body’s wisdom.
While no single practice works for everyone, research has explored how a variety of sensory experiences may support relaxation, stress management, and overall well-being.
Touch & Tactile Approaches
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 137 studies found that touch-based interventions were associated with improvements in anxiety, depression, pain, and well-being across a range of populations. Research in this broader area also continues to explore approaches involving light touch, gentle stroking, sustained pressure, and other tactile experiences.
Self-Massage (Abhyanga)
Abhyanga (Ayurvedic warm oil self-massage) has shown promising preliminary findings for reducing perceived stress and physiological arousal, although additional research is needed. In a small pilot study, participants experienced reductions in perceived stress, heart rate, and blood pressure following a one-hour session. Larger, high-quality studies are still needed to better understand its effects.
Healing Touch
Healing Touch is one of several biofield therapies that has been studied for stress, anxiety, pain, and quality of life. Some studies have reported positive findings, particularly for relaxation and emotional well-being, though systematic reviews conclude that additional high-quality research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
Sound
Research suggests that music and sound-based interventions may help reduce stress and anxiety while promoting relaxation and emotional well-being in a variety of settings. Outcomes vary depending on the individual, the type of intervention, and the context, and research continues to evolve.
These sessions are designed to support wellness and are not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure medical or mental health conditions.
